How should I prevent tooth decay?

Even though first teeth eventually fall out, it’s still important to prevent tooth decay. Start cleaning first teeth with a soft cloth or gauze pad as soon as they come in. After more teeth come in, clean them for the first few months with only a soft toothbrush and water. Be sure to clean your baby’s teeth after feeding, especially at night. Also, prevent prolonged contact with the sugars that can be found in formulas, breast milk and high-sugar juices that can promote decay. And always take a bottle out of your child’s mouth as soon as he or she is finished.
